Uh oh! - Downloading all data
Hi. I bought Factions about a year and a half ago. I recently switched 2 things at once:
A) from a old to a new PC B) from a fast (5 Mbps) to a slower (768) internet connection. Now, i need to put GW on my new PC, but I cant download all of the areas. Is there a way for me to download ALL data at once? MEGA thanks to all repliers!! |

Add -image to the end of the shortcut on the Desktop. (Right-Click > Properties)
Ex: "S:\Game Installs\Guild Wars\Gw.exe" -image |

if ur pc can handle more than one HHD take the HDD out of the old pc put it in your new pc then go to computer then theres the 2 HDDs go into ur old HDD find guildwars and get the stuff go into your new HDD and copy it into your guildwars directory HDD means hard drive that is the best way if you want alot of info sent over between HDDs if you have a like 4gb USB u can put the stuff on that |

Or get an at least 4 GB USB stick or external harddisk, copy your entire GW directory to it, then copy the directory from the USB stick/external harddisk to the "c:/program files" directory on your new computer, and run the game. Far easier than swapping internal harddisks around.
GW is an extremely well-behaved program, there are no files scattered outside its home directory, meaning it can simply be copied and run. You can even play the game from the USB stick, if you get this launcher: http://www.guildwarsguru.com/content...ars-id1759.php |

copy DAT file via cable connection between the computers
dvd temporary plugging the old hard disk to a spare ribbon connector on the new PC to transfer the file. Borrowing an external Hard disk or memstick Whatever works. Best thing I ever bought was an external 2.5 inch 160 gig hard disk. Why ? Because I got it 4 weeks before my system hard disk overheated and began crashing. Windows died but booting up using a Linux cd let me copy all important files before replacing the dying hard disk. |

@Numa - the link for downloading the portable GW program doesn't work anymore. There was a thread about this in Tech forum, I don't know if anyone came up with a new link.

The .dat file also fits on a blank DVD. Just burn it to a DVD as data and you don't need to worry about fiddling around with external hardrives and large USB's if you don't own one...

For what it's worth, you don't need any special software to run GW as a portable app.
Copying the files (gw.exe and gw.dat) directly and running gw.exe will prompt guild wars to try and install (despite the full .dat file being there). Part of the installation is to ensure there is at least 3.6gb free on the drive, the other part is to tell the system where the .dat file is located. 1) If you have that much free space on the flash drive, just run gw.exe. It will initiate the setup process, which will really just write the .dat file location into the registry so it can run 2) If you don't have that much free, you have two options 2A) Recommended. Move the .dat file to the machine's hard drive, run gw.exe from the flash drive, follow the setup process until it starts to download files (and a new .dat file is created), and close the setup program. Delete the temporary/small gw.dat file, and move the big one back into place. Re-start gw.exe and it'll work just fine 2b)Manually create the registry entries for the .dat file path and source. Note that you should only do this if you know what you're doing; editing the registry can be dangerous. To do this, create a new text file, name it "gwpath.reg" or anything with a .reg extension, and paste the following into it: Quote:
If you're on a 64 bit machine, the path will probably be: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\ArenaNet\G uild Wars] This is not for the OP, just an aside about how to run it from a USB drive. The OP can copy the full files to a jump drive, and then just copy them to the new PC. Last edited by eljer; Sep 08, 2008 at 02:37 AM // 02:37.. |
